Abstract:

The problem is that New Hanover County Fire Rescue has never determined the formal education level of its firefighters and lieutenants. The purpose is to determine the level of formal education. Descriptive research was used to identify the basic skills for critical tasks; the math, language, reading skills; and formal education level and attitudes toward education. This was completed through literature review, questionnaires, and the test for adult education (TABE). Results showed critical skills related to math, reading, and writing; a skills gap in the basic skills; most had education beyond high school; and varying attitude towards education. Recommendations include job analysis, revising job descriptions, testing skills during hiring, basic skills programs, and developing a degree support policy.
